Red Rocks was truly rocked on Friday, November 11th, as the Court Appointed Special Advocates of Jefferson and Gilpin Counties (CASA) held their “Rock the House” event, featuring local artists the Hazel Miller Band. Guests were invited to hang out and bet on items in a silent and live auction while eating, listening to the band, and teach about one of Denver’s most pivotal and influential nonprofit organizations.
CASA of Jefferson and Gilpin Counties is dedicated to promoting the safety and well being for children involved in abuse and neglect cases in the 1st Judicial District. Volunteers are provided with training and appointed by a judge to serve as an independent voice for a child. Their goal is to find safe, permanent homes for physically, emotionally or sexually abused and neglected children. A CASA volunteer may be the one consistent adult figure in the life of a child devoted to working in the best interest of the child.
CASA relies solely on donations from private foundations, corporate grants, individual and businesses. The Rock the House event was a new way of raising funds to support CASA and the children they help. CASA helps about 100 children in Jefferson and Gilpin County, but there is still a waiting list on over 1,000 children who are still in need of CASA’s care.
Committee Chairman Cathy Perea is dedicated to this organization and dedicated to the children it helps. “What happens here, at the Rock the House event, is pivotal; it will determine how many of the more than 1,000 children slated for CASA advocacy in Jefferson and Gilpin Counties will benefit from CASA services,” she announced.
The evening started off as guests convened at the Red Rocks Amphitheater visitor center where they bet on an array of donated items and gift baskets. The real fun started when auctioneer Gary Corbett started the live auction and immediately raised over $10,000 by splitting a six-day/six-night trip to Africa between several people. Other big sought after auction items included a week stay at the private alpine lodge in the heart of ski country donated by the Cook Family and a purebred Golden Labrador puppy that brought in $900.
Another exiting auction item was the chance to sing the opening song of the evening with the Hazel Miller Band. Two guests won the auction and once the band started up, Margie Cook and Hazel Miller rocked the house by performing Aretha Franklin’s “Respect.”
One gentle man who won the auction asked Hazel Miller to sing “Happy Birthday” to his daughter Kara who was turning 21 the next day. After the auction winners had their turn, The Hazel Miller Band kicked it up, and rocked Red Rocks into the late hours of the night.
