The Cancer League of Colorado couldn’t have celebrated their 40th anniversary any better: an entire ballroom filled with mouth-watering silent auction items, an assortment of mystery jewelry boxes containing pieces valued at three times the price to pick, an outstanding dinner followed by belly-aching comedy-troupe laughter, and a rocking After Party. And every precious and appreciated dollar raised goes toward the mission of ending cancer and helping those with cancer in Colorado. Everything about the organization is a labor of love. Not one of its 400 members is paid staff and all CLC meetings are held in donated spaces.

"This isn't about being a part of something in name only," said longtime CLC member and The Villager Society Editor Glory Weisberg. "Everyone is expected to work." And everyone does. The outcome of all the efforts will be hundreds of thousands of dollars for cancer research, conveys CLC President and founder of Jewell Insurance Associates Annette Jewell.

“Everyone is touched by cancer in some way,” said contributing artist Scy Caroselli.
She, like so many involved with CLC, looped in friends and family to support the cause. Every year her mother, also an artist, sends a sculpture from Wisconsin for the auction.

The 400 guests eyed more than 300 silent auction items displayed on winding tables and tall panels throughout the first ballroom. Patrons further mingled while making their way to another ballroom decorated with delicately lit tall glass vases topped with red rose bouquets.

Along with celebrating four decades of service, CLC selected four remarkable individuals as its 2009 honorees. “Dealin’ Doug” Moreland, one of the largest auto dealers in the state, was first on the list. Along with supporting CLC for years, he’s the man responsible for the opportunity for a guest to leave holding keys to a fire-engine red Dodge. Honoree Mario Marchello knows the impact of cancer on a family firsthand. After losing his son to cancer, Marchello established the Steven T. Marchello Scholarship, a non-profit corporation that awards college scholarships to cancer survivors. Over ten years, Marchello has given $150,000 to 42 survivors from 24 different high schools. Honoree Dr. David Raben is a radiation oncologist with the University of Colorado and plays an important role in the CLC story. Honoree David E. Weisberg has been with CLC for more than half the organization’s history. He has given countless hours to the mission and recently donated all proceeds from his newly published book on the history of computer systems to CLC.

CLC began as a discussion between five individuals whose families were affected by cancer. The objective of CLC is to ultimately find a cure for cancer. CLC funded projects often produce results that merit further research. Each dollar provided by the CLC then generates an estimated $15 of subsequent research funding. CLC also supports Colorado organizations extending services and support to cancer patients and their families.
