On June 27, 2002, the Denver Chapter of the American Wine Society hosted the first of three Hot Summer Nights meetings on the roof top patio of the Denver Athletic Club.

French champagnes and sparkling wines were paired with sushi (compliments of Shultz Hartgrove and Sushi Redi), cheeses and fresh fruit, including strawberries the size of your fist. The weather was perfect and the view of the Front Range was superb.

This was one of THE most fun and educational parties of the summer. Everyone was laid back and in a good mood. Although this was only the second meeting of the newly formed Denver group, it was readily apparent that many long-lasting friendships have already begun to form.

Eighty-five guests sampled French verse at spectacular table settings while learning the history of champagne and sparkling wines.

Speakers Schultz Hartgrove and Brian Smith instructed the group on the proper use of the wine aroma wheel and wine evaluation chart.

Brian is a certified advanced Sommelier who will be sitting this fall for his Master Sommelier certification. The Denver Chapter is fortunate to be able to count Brian as one of its members, as there are only 41 Master Sommeliers in the United States and 104 worldwide.

AWS is an independent organization with no commercial affiliation. Membership is open to anyone interested in wine - amateur, enthusiast or professional. Membership is $45 per year. Each meeting costs an additional $35. This is a great value for your entertainment dollars.

Set aside the following dates: July 25 - Pinot Grigios; August 29 - German Rieslings; September 25 - Spanish wines; October 24 - Pinot Noir; November 21 - Holiday wines and a silent auction. All meetings begin at 6:00 at the Denver Athletic Club. Reservations are required. Please RSVP to Joe Hubbard, at 720-931-7350.
