The Leaders Overcoming Obstacles to Peace Award (LOOP AWARD) is an ND Hope Award that honors the life and work of a courageous leader who has persevered against overwhelming odds, to create a positive impact that benefits humanity.
This year ND Hope proudly teams up with Africa Development Promise to host Nobel Peace Laureate, Ms. Leymah Gbowee, a formidable woman who is best known for being the leading voice that helped bring an end to the civil war in Liberia. Ms. Gbowee's outreach to Christian and Muslim women started the Women of Liberia Mass Action for Peace Movement. Thousands of women protested in the capital of Monrovia wearing white and demanding peace. They also blockaded stalled peace talks in Ghana until an agreement was signed. Warlord, Charles Taylor resigned and went into exile in Nigeria, and Gbowee's work paved the path for Ellen Johnson Sirleaf's election as Africa's first female head of state.
Gbowee continues her work in peace and conflict resolution as the leader of the Liberia Reconciliation Initiative, President of the Gbowee Peace Foundation Africa, Executive Director of Women, and Peace and Security Network Africa. Her main message highlights the importance of mobilizing women to achieve the ambitious Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of ending extreme poverty and inequality and combating climate change by 2030. This is a message that is critical for our time.
Join us on August 18th at 6:00 pm at the Arvada Center to hear her incredible story and how we can push the agenda for gender equality, to faster achieve the SDGs.
