Statement of Purpose: The mission of the Children’s Law Center is to change the lives of abused and neglected children through compassionate legal advocacy, education and public policy reform. Our staff attorneys serve as court-appointed guardians ad litem who represent and protect the best interests of abused and neglected children involved in open Colorado Department of Human Services cases. We implement individualized and innovative legal strategies to steer our child clients through the overwhelming legal system, pursuing what is best for each child. Our clinical consultants and educational advocates work in collaboration with our attorneys to promote stability, preserve relationships, access therapy, and address educational needs. Our specialized staff maintains low caseloads to develop meaningful relationships with their clients and make informed decisions about placements, relationships, education, and other unmet needs. Our goals are to get our child clients into permanent homes quickly, to eliminate unnecessary moves from one home to another, to make sure they get the mental health care to which they are entitled, and to keep siblings together. And as they grow older, we work to help our teenage clients become self sufficient so they are prepared to “age out” of foster care at age 18. In short, we make the child protection system work for the children we serve. We are a nonprofit law firm serving 1,500 children each year, primarily those in foster care. We are committed to creating stability for the children we work with while pursuing a permanent, nurturing home. We also provide needed education programs for judges, fellow attorneys, law students and foster parents. We touch the lives of all of Colorado's abused and neglected children through our appellate work and public policy reform. Founded in 1981, the Children's Law Center is a nonprofit organization that relies heavily on community support.
