Have You Met?
Name: Jaylene Smith
Profession: Mother, wife, professional fundraiser
Family: Husband Jeff; 2 children – 17-year-old daughter Jessica, 13-year-old son Sage
Story by: Karen Degar McChesney
On a weekday, you’ll find her out and about volunteering; on Saturdays, you’ll find her at an ice rink watching her son play competitive hockey. Meet Jaylene Smith, who is quick to say, “First, I’m a mother and wife. Second, I’m a professional fundraiser.”
The mother of two teenagers, Jaylene approaches every day “trying to be a good role model for my kids.” Top of mind, she says, “I want my kids to know that we have enough time for them and for our community.”
She and husband Jeff practice what they preach. There’s a good chance that on any given weekend, you’ll find the popular couple at some charity function, supporting one of their causes or one of their friend’s causes.
Jaylene, a University of Arizona graduate, credits Gamma Phi Beta for teaching her about philanthropy. After returning home to Denver, getting married and having children, Jaylene became a full-time mother and limited her volunteering to the PTCO and helping at her daughter’s swim meets. After all, she says, “They’re only kids once.”
When her children entered middle school, “My husband’s public relations person asked me to volunteer for Denver Center Alliance,” she explains. “My husband and I co-chaired Saturday Night Alive and then the opening of ‘Sunset Boulevard.’” Today, Jaylene serves on the nominating committee.
“I truly love doing this,” she says of her current volunteer work, including president of the Fine Arts Foundation and American Heart Association board member.
Meanwhile, on weekends, you’ll find Jaylene on a golf course “making time for my one sport and to play as a family.”
