Old-fashioned fun in the form of sack races, tug-of-wars and a camp fire turned Jim and Shery Galbreath's back yard into a kids' paradise Aug. 3.
And it was all for a good cause.
Camp Sweetpea, named for Galbreath's daughter, Emma "Sweetpea" McDonald, was a fund-raiser for the Kempe Children's Foundation Alliance.
Gail Johnson, alliance president, said the get-together was the brainstorm of Shery McDonald Galbreath, who is organizing a series of mini fund-raisers for Kempe this year.
Shery said her goal was to make philanthropy a part of children's lives early, so they form a habit of giving.
At Camp Sweetpea, the activities never stopped. While DJ Joe Hendricks kept the music at a lively pace, kids fished from a plastic pond for magnetic fish, darted in and out of a wooden playhouse, stopped by the face painter's station, munched on hot dogs, enjoyed a series of foot races and ended the evening around the campfire.
Meteorologist Ed Greene entertained the group with star-gazing and a visual trip around the galaxy.
All in all, Sweetpea was a sweet success.
