As dusk settled over Cherry Creek Reservoir, tall thunderheads towered overhead and the last rays of the sun danced in and out of the clouds glinting off the windswept water. Other then a few hearty fishermen, the park seemed the domain of seagulls and waterfowl but at the yacht club activities were just preparing to get underway.

Since the early nineties The Yacht Club Event Center and Marina at Cherry Creek State Park has been the home of Community Sailing of Colorado. Every season the boat slips and ramps come alive with the laughter and joy of young people learning how to conquer wind and water. Learning to sail offers much that serves a young person in their life in general, the knowledge that they control their destiny, responsibility to learn a skill that enables them to navigate their future. Sailing teaches the thrill of balance between risk and control, to use the opposing forces of wind and water to forge ahead in a direction of their choosing.

Steven Frank, Executive Director of Community Sailing, chose Cherry Creek Reservoir as one of the two lakes for the program, the other being Stanley Lake, because it offers optimal conditions for young sailors, its location, close to the city and accessible by public transportation, its size, small enough to be monitored by the staff yet large enough to challenge the curiosity of young minds gone exploring and a beautiful marina and event facility to relax in between classes.

On March 5th, The Yacht Club Event Center and Marina at Cherry Creek State Park hosted Community Sailing’s sixth annual “Fuel the Fantasy” gala. Setting up early, Silent Auction Coordinator Sara Summers was ably assisted by her “first mate” Jim Green. Among the wonderful contributions to the auction were a five-day bare boat charter in Tortola, donated by the Moorings Yacht Charter, a six-day safari to Africa by African Eyes Travel, a one-week stay on Maui courtesy of Nanci Grube and Carl Mattson, as well as many, many more items of food, décor and activities many of them nautically inspired.

The emcee for the evening was 2005 Mrs. Littleton, Tina Ulatowski, dressed to launch a thousand ships in a stunning black sequined dress, complete with tiara. Tina greeted each of the guests as they arrived then turned them over to Mary Jo Houser, Peter Weil and Gerda Spears at the registration table. Community Sailing did a marvelous job of putting together an event with all the surprises of an exotic voyage.

The Yacht Club Event Center provided a continuous flow of flavorful food. The music was provided, first by guitarist Steve Shurack, then by the powerful BluJazz ensemble. Wandering the crowd, and delighting guests, magician Keir Royale performed card tricks and other feats of prestidigitation. Downstairs the cards were being used to reveal the future in the hands of “Madam Katrina” Kathy Ferris.

Many a hair raising tale was told, grog and grub was consumed with gusto, some even navigated the dance floor, and the generous hearts of people who love the sport of sailing opened to share that love with kids, who might otherwise never had the opportunity.

May a gentle steady wind always fill the sails of Community Sailing of Colorado.
