The Branch Rickey Award honors major League Baseballs' Humanitarians. Those who personify "Service above Self." This year's recipient, the Arizona Diamondbacks Luis Gonzalez, is also in the Baseball Humanitarians Hall of Fame. Writes President Bush, ‘Luis is a ballplayer who serves a cause greater than himself. He dedicates his time, talent and energy towards helping others.’

In 1993 Denver Kids, Inc. was formed to help young men who suddenly found themselves without fathers and the heads of households. The goal was to enable these boys to gain employment and complete their education. The original founders of Denver Kids are the Rotary Club of Denver and Denver Public Schools. These organizations have provided continuous sponsorship. The WB2 Gives, a fund of the McCormick Tribune Foundation, provides nonprofit organizations assistance through grants. WB2 Gives is also a supporter of Denver Kids. This evening's silent auction and Branch Rickey Award dinner brought together a community of youth, supporters and a committed Colorado community, not only to toast a true humanitarian, Luis Gonzalez "Gonzo" but also to encourage the next generation of community servants. Gonzo's wisdom to the attendee's in his acceptance speech was to encourage kindness to oneself, the world around you, in school and saying no to peer pressures.
