This year's Summer Youth Celebration luncheon for Goodwill Industries recognized the accomplishments of the Earn 'N Learn students, and was held at Johnson & Wales University August 1. The event honored the outstanding students who have participated in the summer mentoring programs, and the employers who have supported these students by hiring them as interns.
Keynote speaker Tamela Lee, who recently received the David E. Bailey Small Business Advocate of the Year Award from the Denver Metro Chamber of Commerce, told some inspiring stories and gave some advice to the audience. She is an active member of the Goodwill's Board of Directors and is the director of the Denver Small Business Development Center and the Business Services and Business Resource Center for the Denver Metro Chamber of Commerce.
Student Advisory Council Scholarship Awards, which were funded from individual player contributions from the "Driving for Diplomas" and the Goodwill Golf Classic were awarded to Nicole Sanchez, Dorian-Michelle Smith, LaBreea Kyle and Daniela Canizalez. These awards are for tuition and school-related costs for the students who will be attending college this fall.
A new scholarship, the Bradbury Family Scholarship (a distinction awarded to students who are victorious in their determination to overcome hardship in the pursuit of their dreams) was awarded to students from the Goodwill Advisory Council. The winners were: Dorian-Michelle Smith, Roberto Rodriguez and LaBreea Kyle. The Good Feet Scholarship winner, LaBreea Kyle, was awarded to her because of her ability to raise awareness of Goodwill's Youth Programs through print and radio advertising.
The Daniels Scholarship, a much sought after four-year scholarship, was awarded to Dorian-Michelle Smith, Brittney Taylor, Tahijsha Moore and Jaime Tafoya. Adams County Social Services (Goodwill's Youth Opportunity Services Program) awarded 20 scholarship awards to students going on to college and universities. The receipients are: Cindy Basulto, Ana Galvan, Jason Amador, Angelica Garcia, Sonia Zamora, Whitney Taylor, Christina Ford, Nicole Harmon, Jessica Bruce, Jessica Ornelas, Amanda Ornelas, Lacey Goodson, Soledad Guzman, Ashley Gomez, Maria Orozco, Keri Gusa and Jonathon Matthews.
The luncheon concluded with this quote: "When you believe in yourself you can achieve anything!" Go to Goodwill's website: www.goodwilldenver.org to learn more about Goodwill and the many wonderful things they are a part of.
