The Denver Metropolitan Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure followed up its phenomenally successful Race for the Cure® with an opportunity to retire one’s sneakers and put on one’s dancing shoes at its annual Pink Tie Affair on November 10th at Invesco Field at Mile High.
Not just another gala, the Pink Tie Affair closed out Breast Cancer Awareness Month with a splash of hot pink and the opportunity to salsa or rumba the night away. Presented by RE/MAX International, the Pink Tie Affair began at 6 p.m. at INVESCO Field at Mile High and included dinner, dancing, entertainment from the Pink Flamingos and silent and live auction items. Once again, 9NEWS anchors/reporters Kim Christiansen and Mark Koebrich were the evening’s emcees and honorary chairs.
The Denver Metropolitan Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure was founded in 1994 to carry out the mission of the national organization on a local level. As a grant-making organization, the Affiliate distributes the funds raised through special events such as the Komen Denver Race for the Cure® and the Pink Tie Affair™, as well as through the generosity of individual and corporate donors, right back into the community. Since 1994, the Affiliate has raised more than $23 million, and has awarded $17 million to not-for-profit organizations that provide breast health and breast cancer education, screening, treatment and treatment support services to uninsured and underinsured individuals living in the Affiliate’s 12-county service area. The Affiliate has also contributed more than $6 million to research through Komen National over the past 13 years. In April 2007, the Affiliate awarded more than $3 million to fund 35 local projects focusing on breast cancer education, screening, treatment and support. Another $1 million was awarded to international and national breast cancer research through the Komen Award and Research Grant Program. Seventy-five percent of the money raised (minus expenses) supports Denver-area breast cancer programs, clinical trials, and life-saving services for women of all backgrounds and ages.
Susan G. Komen for the Cure, formerly known as the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, was established in 1982 by Nancy Brinker to honor the memory of her sister, Susan G. Komen, who died from breast cancer at the age of 36. Today, the organization is an international organization with a network of more than 75,000 volunteers working through local Affiliates and events like Komen Race for the Cure® to eradicate breast cancer as a life-threatening disease. A global leader in the fight against breast cancer, Komen fulfills its mission through support of innovative breast cancer research grants, meritorious awards and educational, scientific and community outreach programs around the world. Through fiscal year 2006, Komen, together with its Affiliate Network, corporate partners and generous donors, has invested nearly $1 billion in breast cancer research, education, screening and treatment programs.
