Children's Hospital patrons came in from the cold on a chilly November 28 evening to shop for a good cause.
The event was a Special Shopping Evening at Andrisen Morton, where men's cashmere, fine leather and wools went faster than front-row tickets to "Lion King." A portion of all purchases went to fund a new adolescent oncology unit at Children's Hospital Cancer Center.
"Adolescent oncology is a rare bird," Dr. Brian Greffe, a staff oncologist at Children's and an associate professor of pediatrics at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center, told the assembled shoppers.
"These patients can fall through the cracks -- they don't have as great a (cure) rate as younger patients," said Dr. Greffe.
A new center for teens is scheduled to open next year, he said.
Children's Hospital Cancer Center is the leading pediatric oncology facility in the Rocky Mountains, he added. The center sees 140 new cases a year. "We cure 75 percent of our patients, and that number increases every year."
