Colorado "I Have a Dream" Foundation Celebrates 20 years

"For a dream to come true you have to start with a dreamer," Erin Gruwell of Freedom Writers and featured speaker.

The 20th Anniversary of the Colorado "I Have A Dream" Foundation was celebrated at the Hyatt downtown Denver on Thursday night April 3, 2008. More than 800 people, including political leaders, community supporters, businesses, sponsors, volunteers and youth dreamers joined the award-winning non-profit organization, whose mission is to help youth from Denver’s disadvantaged communities to graduate from high school.

Amongst the supporters were Mayor John Hickenlooper, who expressed pride in introducing the Summit Award winners, Jazzaire Fejeran and Jess Vega, and commented how these two amazing individuals overcame what seemed to be insurmountable obstacles to find hope through the "I Have A Dream Foundation" and to get accepted to college.

Governor Bill Ritter expressed that the vision of this foundation in support of at risk children is the best at what they do. The efforts to provide caring and continued support, with such committed volunteers as Leslie and Noel Ginsburg, has been an inspiration to all.

Other long-time community supporters in attendance were Dr. Dean Prina, Steve Levey, Sr. Principal/CEO of GHP Horwath, Danny Buscarello with Remax Alliance and Anita Padilla-Fitzgerald of Megastar Financial. Several of the 2001-2007 roastees were present as 2008 honorary co-hosts: Joe Blake (Denver Metro Chamber); Mayor Wellington Webb; University of Colorado President, Bruce Benson and Denver City Mayor John Hickenlooper.

"I Have A Dream" Board President Rich Rainaldi was given standing applause when he announced that the foundation raised more than $2 million locally in support of its mission. He also thanked the three $25,000 event presenting sponsors: Intertech Plastics, GHP Financial Group and Key Bank.

Keynote speaker, now famed educator Erin Gruwell, and former student and original Freedom Writer Maria Reyes inspired the audience with their amazing story of educating and overcoming all odds. Their story, that became the critically acclaimed film "Freedom Writers," proves that commitment, love and sustaining support can transform lives.

In honor of the great leader Martin Luther King, Jr., and his profound ideals, the "I Have a Dream Foundation” was founded on the principal to judge those by the content of their character and nothing else.
