When you think of the Boys and Girls Clubs of Metro Denver it brings back a lot of memories from years past. This organization has done some marvelous things for the children throughout the Metro area. And it was time to recognize some of the outstanding boys and girls who have made positive differences in lives.
The Seawell Grand Ballroom was just a place to hold such honors. Friday night the ballroom was very elegantly designed and you could tell there were a lot of sports enthusiasts in the room as well. With all the silent auction items autographed by professional athletes in all sports, this event was one not to be missed.
And not to be missed were not only the children in the ballroom but some professional athletes as well. Pat Bowlen - owner and CEO of the Denver Broncos was there with his wife Annabel and some of the players as well--Dominique Foxworth, Champ Bailey and newly acquired teammate Boss Bailey. Along with these gentlemen was former Denver Bronco Billy Thompson. Billy has been a long time supporter of the Boys and Girls Club, as has Mr. Bowlen and the entire team.
The looks on the children's faces were a sight to see as these gentlemen moved amongst the guests, smiling and bidding on silent auction items. The Youth of the Year Award is presented annually to Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Denver’s most outstanding members. Honorees are selected based on year-long efforts in the areas of leadership, academic achievement, community service and overcoming obstacles. This year's recipients were:
The 2008 Champion of Youth Award was presented to Pat Bowlen and the Denver Broncos Football Club. Mr. Bowlen has pledged $1.2 million to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Denver to operate the Broncos Boys & Girls Club in Montebello, which opened in August of 2003. Additionally, under his leadership, the Denver Broncos Football Club has been integrally involved in club expansion with the opening of the Darrent Williams Memorial Teen Center this spring, in support of the Boys and Girls Clubs’ mission of providing hope and opportunity to more and more youth in our community.
Yes, the clubs have been in existence for a long time and will continue to grow, especially in Colorado with the help and support that was received here tonight. If you would like to learn more about a location near you or would like to help volunteer your time and talents, contact the Boys and Girls Clubs of Metro Denver at 303-892-9200 or email them at firstname.lastname@example.org
