Colorado is considered one of the healthier states and yet, over 50% of the children are still overweight. It is the mission of the First American State Bank Fitness Festival to help develop skills for a “Healthier Lifestyle” and to donate funds for youth development as a deterrent to negative behavior such as alcohol, other drug use and violent behavior. They do this through encouraging positive alternative behaviors.

The First American State Bank, title sponsor for the event, held a patron party on Thursday, June 19, 2008. Over 100 patrons, sponsors and friends gathered to kick off its 8th year and unveil the new t-shirt design for the 5K fitness run and walk, which is scheduled for September 6, 2008 at Crescent Park in the DTC. The winner of this year's Fitness Festival t-shirt contest was Ryan Hawley. His t-shirt design will be printed on 3.000 t-shirts, which will be worn by all of the race entrants.

Welcoming the evening's patrons was Nick Lepetsos with First American State Bank and corporate co-chair for the event. Nick introduced the founders of the Fitness Festival, Jay and Kristina Davidson. They talked about the commitment First American State Bank has to the children of the community and that to date, the Fitness Festival has raised over $430,000 for the Community Asset Project, a partner with the Cherry Creek School District . Guests also heard from Gordon Loui from Kaiser Permanente, the Healthy Lifestyle sponsor, and Monte Moses, Superintendent of the Cherry Creek School District. The many generous sponsors and partners were recognized for their participation in this important event.

A silent auction with many unique items was also held to raise funds for the The Community Asset Project, which is committed to building community partnerships that promote developmental assets, ensuring all children maximize their life skills and academic potential. The partnership that CAP has with the Cherry Creek School District impacts over 50,000 students and their families through many youth leadership trainings and other asset building initiatives.

This year's Fitness Festival race promises to be a fun event. A one-mile fitness walk has been added to the regular festivities, which include prizes and awards, kids' entertainment, autographs by sports professionals, a silent auction and a Secure Child Photo ID System. This year's Grand Marshals are Tony Granato, Head Coach of the Colorado Avalanche and Mark Randall from the Denver Nuggets. There will be food samplings from 14 restaurants, making this one of Denver's more unique races. The 5 K run/walk and one-mile fitness walk will be held on Saturday, September 6, 2008 at Crescent Park on DTC Blvd and Belleview. Registration and pre-race activities will start at 7:30 a.m. The race begins at 8:30 a.m., followed by the many activities and food samplings. The presentation of the prizes, team prizes and drawings will follow at 10:30 a.m. This race is for runners, kids, parents, grandparents and singles. The entire community is welcome and encouraged to participate, build teams or just come for the fun.
