Threat of blizzard did not deter attendees at the the sixth annual HOOPS & Hoopla, benefiting National Jewish Health.  This was truly a Fan's Night Out with the West Club Level at INVESCO Field at Mile High buzzing from the time doors opened a half hour before the first semi-final men’s basketball game started on April 4. Virginia Cain was one of the many cheerful greeters at the entrance to the event. This dedicated lady has spent 44 years with National Jewish Health, making her one of the longest tenured employees at the leading institution in the country focusing on respiratory, cardiac, immune and related diseases.

Inside, a nine-panel video wall and big-screen televisions near the open bars and throughout the West Club Level showed the games for those who were interested – and those who were interested were following closely! - while others gathered around the strategically placed pool tables and poker tables. Lines formed for a chance to shoot hoops to the side of the room, while golfers tried their hand at fantasy golf nearby. The gaming tables were generously provided by BKD LLP, Consolidated Electrical Distributor, Crescent Electrical Supply, Gexpro, Greg Fisher Lighting Sales, Illumination Systems, Krische Construction Peregrine Group Development LLC , UMB Bank of Colorado and Meridian Fire & Security, just to name a few.

The silent auction table was packed with unique items and bid sheets filled up quickly.  Among the winners were Rich Schierburg who won a family portrait package, Paulette Brody who won two nights at the theatre with a prefixe dinner at Restaurant Kevin Taylor and David Greiner who won a night on the town with Comedy Works and dinner.  Generous donations from many local vendors made the elegant event possible.

Angela and Gerald Hawkins attended the event with grateful expressions for the help their son Marcus has been receiving for his asthma. Marcus is now nine years old and a fully functioning little boy, thanks to help from National Jewish Health doctors and ongoing care and treatment.

Guests enjoyed a beautiful buffet dinner catered by Epicurean Catering. Event Co-Chair Rich Schierburg of Peregrine Group Development represented the rest of the “Coaches” (the other co-chairs were Greg Kalkwarf, John Kamprath, Ward Mahanke, William Mutch, Sean Nohavec and Rick Pastor), to introduce the award given Griener Electric for their generous support of the event and briefly spoke of the difference National Jewish Health makes in the lives of their patients, touching most notably on the amount of free care given to those that cannot afford it.

Final attendance was marked at 375 with ticket sales, donations and silent auction totaling more than $100,000 to benefit the institution.

Events like this are wonderful to see as our local community generously supports the healing work that National Jewish Health provides, not only to those in need in Denver but around the country as well.
