It was quite a memorable evening as a well-heeled and spirited crowd gathered at the Hyatt Regency Convention Center Saturday evening for the 10th annual Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation's "Dream Gala."
Dubbed "an evening of urban elegance," the evening's festivities were just that, as smiling and sparkling guests perused a wide array of silent auction items, stopped continuously to pet live auction canine "Isley" and be thoroughly entertained throughout the program by the Up Close and Musical Orchestra, accompanied by The BigWheel Band, DJ Vajra and DJ Checkone and the Wikked Evolution Dancers.
During a scrumptious filet and shrimp dinner provided by Hyatt catering, sponsors and past honorees were ackowledged by emcee extraordinaire Vic Lombardi, who first entered the room pretending to be Nuggets star Carmelo Anthony. Gala chairs Don and Jennifer Baldridge took the stage to thank everyone, especially Don's company, DCP Midstream, for stepping up as presenting sponsor. The Baldridge's daughter Sydney, who was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at age 4, was flitting around the room during the reception, enjoying the evening and stopping by often to pet Isley. Sydney and the other 28 Youth Ambassadors are why we do this, hoping to one day find a cure for this affliction that can randomly affect children at any age.
The 2009 Commitment to the Dream award was presented to Dr. William G. Wright MD, MSPH, Executive Medical Director and President of Colorado Permanente Medical Group. He was a driving force behind the development of new insurance products designed to meet employers’ needs and emphasize the strengths of the integrated delivery model. While serving in these roles, he built an impressive reputation as a respected and progressive business leader who has been called on to help advise, influence, and shape the vision for a healthier
JDRF, the leading charitable funder and advocate of juvenile (type 1) diabetes research worldwide, was founded in 1970 by the parents of children with juvenile diabetes – a disease which strikes children suddenly, makes them insulin-dependent for life, and carries the constant threat of devastating complications. Since inception, JDRF has provided more than $900 million in direct funding to diabetes research. More than 80 percent of JDRF’s expenditures directly support research and research-related education.
JDRF funds more than $3 million annually to research grants in Colorado through the Barbara Davis Center and the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center. DCP Midstream is dedicating a large portion of the money raised during the tenth annual Dream Gala to research projects being conducted here in Colorado. Money raised will benefit more than 5,000 children locally. JDRF’s mission is constant: to find a cure for diabetes and its complications through the support of research. Approximately 40 children are diagnosed with diabetes each day in America. We can dream that one day will come when there will be none.
