Everybody loves the circus. Even better than that is the Cirque du Soleil. Add to that, the Cirque du Soleil Kooza to benefit homeless youth through Urban Peak programs and you have one amazing evening for everyone!
Friday night, August 21, Urban Peak threw a pre-show party for over 400 guests who bought tickets to see the fun and dazzling Cirque du Soleil Kooza. Cirque du Soleil, who has been a long time supporter of Urban Peak, provided 700 tickets which were sold with all of the proceeds going towards the Urban Peak cause for homeless youth. 100 additional tickets were provided in which some of the youth served by the Urban Peak programs were given a chance to see this world class entertainment. Hosted at Brooklyn's at the Pepsi Center, the entire second level filled up quite fast as quests where invited to eat, drink and mingle before the show. Brooklyn's provided a feast of grilled hamburgers, hotdogs and chicken accompanied by a few salads and chips and dip.
Ceo Kay Ramachandran, along with Anne Harris, Director of Development and Board Chair Stefen Stein took just a few moments during the evening to thank everyone for their support as well as acknowledge Cirque du Soleil Kooza for donating the tickets to raise funds for Urban Peak. By the end of the party, the room cleared out as fast as it filled up as guests, young and old, headed off for a delightful evening at the Cirque du Soleil. According to the UP website, the most recent point-in-time survey reported there are 972 young people age 18-25 living on the streets of Denver. Additional statistics report that 65% of Urban Peak youth reported experiencing some form of abuse - physical, sexual or mental.
The mission of Urban Peak is to help young people overcome homelessness and other real life challenges by providing safety, respect, essential services and a supportive community, empowering them to become self-reliant adults. Urban Peak is unique in that it provides an entire continuum of care to support vulnerable youth aged 14-24 as they make the often difficult transition from childhood to mature, self-sufficient young adults with the skills, abilities and confidence to overcome various personal barriers and make positive choices for their future. This includes street outreach to homeless youth, a 40-bed youth shelter, case management, housing, education and employment assistance, creative arts programs, youth development and recreational activities.
