FACES (Family Advocacy, Care, Education, Support) provided food and wine at the highest level for their annual Grapes Against Wrath fund-raiser - paired with spirited competition between Denver's top chefs during two cook-offs. Streeter McClure, author of "The Single Man's Guide to Cooking with Beer" emceed the evening and was the live auction host. Pat Miller, the Gabby Gourmet, ably assisted Streeter during the cook-off.
Roth Distributing graciously opened their Aurora Concept Center to host the event. The Concept Center sports a collection of high-end residential kitchens, plus a spacious kitchen auditorium, a perfect site for the cook-off. The chefs - Brian Laird of Barolo Grill; Michael Bortz, City Bakery; Tyler Wiard, Elway's Cherry Creek; Alex Seidel, Fruition; Elise Wiggins, Panzano; Goose Sorensen, Solera; Lance Barto, Strings; and Wade Kirwan, Vesta Dipping Grill and Steuben's - each used one of the model kitchens to showcase their food.
Excitement was built by the two cook-offs. The first featured Chef Goose Sorenson of Solera pitted against Chef Lance Barto of Strings. The second saw Chef Tyler Wiard of Elway's Cherry Creek go up against Wade Kirwan, Vesta Dipping Grill/Steubens. A panel of judges had the enviable task of tasting the results.
Outstanding auction items included a Caribbean cruise aboard a beautiful yacht, and a 7-days at a Costa Rican home, a surprise auction item that delighted the FACES team.
FACES works on eradicating domestic child abuse through their Home Visitation Program. The program provides services for the prevention and treatment of child abuse, neglect and family violence through:
Visits are conducted weekly or bi-weekly (as the intensity of need diminishes). The length of service (which can range from three to eighteen months) is tailored to each family’s needs. Counselors also assist parents in accessing community health care and social services, housing opportunities, childcare, and other circles of support within their community.
Programs are centered mainly in Denver, Jefferson, Adams and Arapahoe counties, with limited access in Douglas and Broomfield counties. They have been serving families and infants since 1974. For more information, log on to www.facesonline.org.
