Honorees Ron and Nastassja Zappolo
129,000 children are awaiting adoptive homes in America. That means no Santa coming down the chimney; no laughter at the dinner table; no baseball games or family dog or a kiss goodnight. Things many of us take for granted, and no child should be without.
Nastassja Zappolo knows what it's like to grow up awaiting adoption to a loving family. That is why she gives tirelessly of her time, talents and resources to ensure that as many kids as possible do not have to endure what she had to endure during her childhood. Her dedication and tenacity were acknowledged and honored at this year's Adoption Exchange Fantasy Ball, entitled "You are the Missing Piece."
More than 500 people converged at the Seawell Ballroom Saturday night, but it was a cohesive and friendly crowd. Emcees Tom Mustin and Brooke Wagner of CBS4 expertly guided the program, which included a few words from board chair Ray Nutt and event co-chair Brad McNealy, a lively paddle raiser involving the McNealys and vice-chairs BJ Dyer and Guenther Vogt (who outdid themselves with gorgeous centerpieces and flower arrangements throughout the the room), an upbeat auction byTerry Wiedeman and a few words from Executive Director, Dr. Dixie van de Flier Davis. Ron and Nastassja Zappolo received the Wednesday's Child Award, and the well-known news and sportscaster quipped upon taking the stage, "I'm not usually accustomed to public speaking...." Nastassja spoke direcrly from her heart directly to the hearts of all in the room as she described her wish to make sure as many children as possible were in loving and caring homes. "Thank you for loving the children and opening your hearts," she told the crowd. The end of the evening segued into some sultry blues by popular songstress Kelley Hunt, providing a perfect finish to a perfect evening.
From the puzzle pieces expertly placed in the flower arrangements to the little cookie puzzle pieces in the dessert, "You are the Missing Piece" had a special balance and flourish to it from beginning to end. The goal of the event is to raise funds so that children will have a place in the world. As one child, recently adopted, said to her new mother: "You did not give birth to me, but you brought me into this world."
The Adoption Exchange is a non-profit child welfare organization founded in 1983 to work for safety and permanence in the lives of foster children. Initially an exchange point for caseworkers to discuss placement of children with families seeking to adopt in the Rocky Mountain region, the organization has grown considerably over the years and now impacts national trends in child welfare, employs over fifty paid staff and counts on scores of volunteers to carry out its mission.
Headquartered in Colorado, The Adoption Exchange offices now operate in Missouri, Utah, New Mexico and Nevada. Oklahmoa, South Dakota and Wyoming are also participating member states, and The Adoption Exchange's National Education Center has established a national presence.
