Wishes do come true.  The Make-A-Wish Foundation of Colorado held it's annual Wine & Wishes benefit on August 6, 2010 at the Denver Marriott City Center to raise funds to grant trips to one their most popular destinations: Hawaii.  There are currently at least 10 critically ill children in Colorado waiting for their Hawaii wishes to come true.

Generous businesses and individuals continued to contribute amazing items to the silent and live auction.  Some of the items included an electric guitar autographed by Colorado rock band, The Fray, a Pebble Beach getaway, a private dinner party for 10 cooked by chef Kevin Taylor, a trip to the Breeders Cup in Kentucky, and a vacation in Costa Rica.  Live aution host Don Martin kept the guests entertained and the bidding hot, making it a resounding success.  Hors d'oeuvres of macadamia nut crusted chicken with coconut cream sauce and creme brulee were provided by the Denver Mariott and wine sponsors Grand Vin, Republic National Distributing Company and Beverage Distributors provided a grand selection of vintages.

But the best part of the evening is hearing the stories about the Wish Kids.  Shea, who made his trip in July 2010, is quite the young historian and WWII buff.  Visiting Pearl Harbor and USS Arizona Memorial were the highlights of his trip.  Some of his other adventures included snorkeling and seeing squid.

Dean, who made his trip in 2009, went for the surfing.  Dean had lost 25% of his body mass from cancer treatments.  He could no longer play football with his friends, often relegated to the couch, sleeping off the effects of treatment in his uniform and pads.  "Cancer took away a lot of things from me.  Hawaii gave them back."  Thanks to Make-A-Wish, Dean took his first airplane trip, saw the ocean for the first time, and even got to surf.

As Don Martin noted, public speaking often terrifies a lot of people.  You could put 10 adults up on this stage and have none of them be as courageous and articulate as these kids.
