There wasn't a person in the audience who didn't have a tear in their eye and a lump in their throat listening to Dr. Frank Bingham accept the Award of Courage award at the 11th annual Soup for the Soul event Monday night.

It wasn't so much that Dr. Bingham lost his wife and two children in 2006 as they stepped into a crosswalk and were killed by a drunk driver. It was more of how Dr. Bingham looked upon the tragedy and his life since then with so much grace, dignity, faith and forgiveness.

"There are three places you need to look when looking for courage," he told the rapt audience. "Look inside, look around and look up." He then went on to recount some of the experiences he has had since that fateful evening. He spoke of being in the white chapel on a dismal, gray day and being the first to look upon the caskets of his wife and two children. "Three rays of light all of a sudden came into the room, even and precise as you can imagine," he said. "They came out of nowhere on a gray day." He also told the story of how he dreamt of kite surfing while he was in the hospital after the accident, something he was not really familiar with. After his physical injuries healed over several years, he followed his heart and found himself traveling to a small, remote kite surfing mecca in Spain. "That is where I ended up meeting my fiancee." It seems that the universe is in sync.

That sort of attitude and grace is the epitomy of what drives Porter and St. Anthony Hospice. Centura Health at Home CEO Erin Denholm spoke with heartfelt gratitude to the crowd of supporters, as she does every year, although this year was especially poignant because her own Porter and St. Anthony Hospice helped a dear friend of hers recently face the end of life.

Several popular restaurants brought their A game to the downtown Sheraton to support Soup for the Soul and showcase their culinary talents. (see restaurant list above). It was once again a night to remember, for soup can warm the tummy, but the people of Hospice warm the heart.

For more than 25 years, thousands of patients and family members have had their lives enriched by Porter Hospice and St. Anthony Hospice. The staff ensures that every home is a comforting sanctuary. Porter and St. Anthony believes that everyone in the community deserves to face the end of life's journey with dignity and respect, irregardless of their ability to pay. Funds raised at Soup for the Soul pay for programs not reimbursed by the Medicare Hospice benefit and include spiritual care, bereavement services and volunteer coordination.
