Cardiovascular diseases and stroke are the #1 cause of death in Denver. It was a tall order when, in 1997, the American Heart Association set an agressive goal to reduce death from heart disease and stroke by 25% by the year 2010. Not only was that goal realized, it was surpassed, dropping the death rate by 30%.
Saturday evening was a time to celebrate such strides, as the Denver chapter of the American Heart Association presented "Fortunes of the Heart," the 2011 Heart Ball.
Guests decked out in primarly black and red graced the halls of the Hyatt Regency Convention Center to bid, chat, eat, drink, dance and celebrate. Emcees Denise Plante and Christine Chang, along with event chairs Dick and Robin Kelly, worked hard to welcome and thank supporters and guests.
The Heart Ball is the key fundraiser to support research and heart healthy programs for children in the Denver community. Much of the money raised at the Heart Ball will go to fund CPR training for children and adults in the greater Denver community. Funds will also go to directly support and impact funding for congenital heart defects--representing the number one birth defect in American children. It will also fund programs designed to reverse the disturbing trend with our nation's children, whose health and longevity are threatened by an obesity epidemic, as well as youth tobacco prevention and education.
