Gwen and Moses Brewer don't do anything half way. Well-known as a philanthropic team, they are being honored for their tireless support for mental health advocacy at the 2011 "Tribute" event for Mental Health America of Colorado. It's a given that the party, which will be at the Sheraton Denver Downtown on September 22, will be full of surprises and interesting twists. Gwen is a board member for MHAC, and she and Moses made an empassioned plea to fellow planners and supporters attending the Tribute kickoff Thursday to make a special difference this year.

New President and CEO of MHAC Don Mares and Board Chair Seth Belzley helped to welcome the crowd to the beautiful Buell Mansion, and event chairs Helene and Brian Cook also got into the kickoff spirit (literally) by offering to coordinate a special wine basket comprised of top-notch wines donated by board and committee members. The Cooks and the Brewers have known each other for years, and Brian conjured up fond memories by recalling that he sold Moses a car in the '70s. "If you can imagine Moses (who is basketball star height) in a Fiat, then you'll know why this was such a fun memory for me."

Don Mares outlined several successful programs offered by MHAC, a non-profit organization that has been providing leadership in the mental health field for 55 years:

  • Speaker's bureau, where advocates go out into the community to teach groups about mental health issues;
  • "We Can," which includes a retreat in Estes Park and ways to highlight advocacy efforts;
  • Pro bono, offering free mental health services to those who need it;
  • "Check your head," using elements of rap and hip-hop to get young people involved in developing life-saving initiatives.

Mark your calendars for September 22--Tribute will be an exciting and powerful event this year. Log on to www.mhacolorado.org for more information.
