These semifinal designers find out if they will be part of the 2011 Rising Star Runway Gala (Oct. 8) at the end of July.
With style and spirit, Denver fashionistas gathered for a summer soiree at a private residence in Cherry Hills Village on Friday, July 9, to preview this fall’s 2011 Rising Star Runway Gala. Designed to honor emerging area designers, the biennial “Project Runway meets the Academy Awards” affair is the signature event of Fashion Group International of Denver. The 2011 edition is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 8 at the RedLine Gallery in downtown Denver, and finalists to be featured on the runway this fall will be announced at the end of July. The 2009 winner was Holli Gibson, designer for Lamanblu, a children’s wear line.
Guests at the poolside reception had the opportunity to meet and mingle with this year’s group of semifinalist designers—many wearing their own apparel and accessory creations. A few lucky attendees won entertainment-themed prizes, from wine to concert tickets. While weather conditions ranged from pleasant and sunny to some thunder and a few raindrops, the entire event was marked with anticipation and enthusiasm for this fall's Rising Star gala. As if by cue, the evening was capped by an always-fashionable double-rainbow.
Co-chairs for the Rising Star gala—Nathalia Faribault, Carol Engel-Enright and Tommy Collier—and FGI Regional Director Scottie Taylor Iverson were all on hand to introduce the designers and greet guests. In a written statement, Faribault says, “We are thrilled with the response to our ‘Call for Entries’ and quality and diversity of applicants. This is an opportunity to recognize talent in Colorado and the business of fashion.” Proceeds benefit FGI fashion scholarships and educational outreach programs.
This year’s Rising Star event promises a red-carpet atmosphere. Says Engel-Enright, “There will be star attractions and a VIP lounge for sponsors. New this year is a philanthropic partnership with The Gathering Place and Brandon Center. A portion of proceeds will be donated to these two charities, in addition to contributing to our own industry.” Businesses and individuals still have the chance to sponsor one or more of the gala's nine runway designers for $1,000. FGI is a global nonprofit organization of fashion industry professionals who connect, create and move the fashion industries: apparel, accessories, beauty and home. The first nonprofit fashion organization became a force in New York City, the organization’s headquarters, in 1930 and now boasts 5,000 members worldwide. Helena Rubenstein, Eleanor Roosevelt and Edith Head are among those responsible for FGI’s founding. Fashion Group International of Denver celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2008 and won back-to-back international awards at the last two FGI conferences: in 2010 for the 2009 Rising Star runway gala, and in 2011 for membership.
