Paris, schmaris. Mile High style is alive and thriving in Denver. Whether chic and sleek, playful and fresh, or edgy and urban, the creative designs of area up-and-comers were showcased (where else?) on the runway at the sixth biennial Rising Star celebration hosted by Fashion Group International Denver. On Saturday, October 8, around 400 fashionistas dressed their best to mix, mingle and be dazzled by the creations of bright new talents at District 475, where Lindsay Bloom, of Bloom Jewelry, was named 2011 Rising Star.

Guests had a chance to catch up with friends among a confident crowd at the red-carpet reception. The cocktail hour featured tasty tidbits by Occasions by Sandy, and the opportunity to purchase gourmet star cookies created by Julie Whitcomb, of Ziva Chocolates, to win prizes. Co-chairs Nathalia Faribault, Tommy Collier and Carol Engel-Enright were spotted putting finishing touches on the show, along with event advisor, FGI Regional Director Scottie Taylor Iverson. Miss Colorado, Diana Dreman, was also on hand as a gracious hostess, headed to Las Vegas for the Miss America pageant in January. Then it was on to the runway spectacular, where feisty and tres stylish emcee Denise Plante kept the party going with spirited banter.
The fashion show featured finalists in 13 categories, chosen from a plethora of talented applicants: Kaitlyn Thomas, KaiT Designs; Meggie Hodge, Fahrenkamp Apparel; Tracey Blake, Tracey Lynn Golf; Gabriela Martinez, Gabriela Designs; Maggie Burns, Marie-Margot Bridal; Natalee Moldenhauer, Natalee M Designs; Dana Van Daele, Grey Sunshine; A.J. Machete and Lianna K, Denver Bespoke; Kotomi Yoshida, Studio Yoshida; Dan Powell, Panache Cycle Wear; Dan Abrams and Greg Steen, FlyLow Gear; Samantha Louise Larkins, Samantha Louise Jewelry; as well as this year’s Rising Star Lindsay Bloom, of Bloom Jewelry.
Finalists were announced at a preview party held on in July. Judging criteria was based not only on past and present designs, but also industry experience (from two to seven years) and long-range business plan. In September, the finalists went through an extensive personal interview process, with additional perusal of five samples of current creations, portfolios, marketing strategies and manufacturing distribution channels.
Proceeds from the event go not only to FGI’s fashion scholarships and educational outreach, but also to VOA”s Brandon Center and The Gathering Place—both assist battered as well as homeless women and children in Denver. The Rising Star Awards honor the accomplishments of new creative talent in Colorado, reflecting the FGI mission to advance professionals in the fashion and design industries.
FGI’s goal is to be the pre-eminent authority on the business of fashion and design, and help its members become more effective in their careers. The organization provides insights on major trends in person, online and in print, plus access to business professionals as a gateway to the influence fashion plays in the marketplace. The Fashion Group International was founded in 1930, spearheaded by Vogue Editor-in-Chief Edna Woolman Chase, and the Denver chapter was created in 1958. New and emerging designer Holli Gibson was honored as The Rising Star and David Jacobs, founder of Spyder, with the Lifetime Achievement Award.
