Red carpet? Check. Community awards, placed on stage. Movie thriller “Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy”…ready to roll for its U.S. premier. Cue the full moon and pass the popcorn. On Thursday, Dec. 8, the scene was set for more than 500 guests to have an entertaining evening at this year’s Reel Hope, a benefit to raise funds for Jewish Family Service.

Despite the fancy digs of the Ellie Caulkins Opera House, both the dress code and the atmosphere were decidedly casual and convivial at the 16th annual fundraiser. Arriving partygoers were treated to the delectable scent of freshly made popcorn, and had a chance to munch a few handfuls while greeting old friends and new during a cocktail reception in the lobby. Vodka Reel was the signature drink of the night, a pomegranate mojito garnished with cranberry for an extra festive touch. Each guest received a goody bag and a Kevin Taylor boxed dinner to take into the theater.
“Live with Lisa” radio personality Lisa Belkov-Snyder, of Mile High Sports FM 93.7 and AM 1510, emceed a program that honored two dynamic Denver couples. Harvey and Sue Allon, longtime JFS devotees, civic leaders, philanthropists and influential forces in the mortgage industry, received the Kal Zeff Business Leader of the Year Award. Ken and Rebecca Gart, multiyear JFS supporters known for their business savvy, civic leadership and continuing support of children’s causes, were presented with the Jack Shapiro Community Service Award.
JFS board chair Alan Mayer spoke briefly and presented the awards, and CEO Yana Vishnitsky also addressed the crowd, sharing her own personal experiences utilizing the agency’s services. The JFS “chain reaction of good” mindset was presented in a short video that showcased the agency’s positive impact. With an anonymous benefactor pledging to match contributions up to $25,000, guests were invited to donate during the 10-minute intermission. After the screening, the evening ended on a sweet note with Kevin Taylor desserts and beverages.
