The lines formed early as everyone waited to see The Chihuly Venetians: from the George R. Stroemple Collection at the Foothills Art Center VIP Opening Night preview party.
In 1968 a group of artists in Golden, Colorado created the Foothills Art Center, a renowned home for both local front range art and important national exhibitions. The gallery is housed in the former First Presbyterian church, which was originally built in 1872.
From April 7th through June 30th the center is thrilled to host The Chihuly Venetians: from the George R. Stroemple Collection. The collection contains over 45 works from American glass artist, Dale Chihuly. One of the pre-eminent members of the American Studio Glass Movement, Chihuly works with teams of glass blowers to create monumental, complex pieces of glass. His west coast studio is an international center for fine art glass creation.
The works from this series were inspired by the glassmakers of Venice. As a Fulbright fellow, Dale Chihuly studied glassmaking in Venice and has often collaborated with European glass blowers in his Washington State studio.
The Stroemple collection is owned by George R. Stroemple, an Oregon based philanthropist. The work of Chihuly, with its strong roots in nature and sea life, appeals to this west coast outdoorsman.
In conjunction with the 50th anniversary of the American Studio Glass Movement, glass works from Denver glass artist Kit Karbler and the Blake Street Glass Studio were also on display.
Once the doors opened, the crowd of over 200 thronged in to see the work. Foothills Executive DIrector Reilly Sanborn welcomed the crowd of VIPs, and Exhibit Curator Marianne Lorenz spoke to the group about Chihuly and his works on display. Before and after viewing the exhibit, guests enjoyed libations and appetizers from The Golden Hotel.
