Two years ago, Kempe took Manhattan and last year it was Paris! This year the cosmopolitan city of Hong Kong was the themed journey guests experienced at "Kempe Takes Hong Kong."
“East met West” with a night of sights, sounds, and tastes of Hong Kong to raise money for Kempe and celebrate the 40th anniversary of The Kempe Center. The celebration also marked the 50th anniversary of founder Dr. C. Henry Kempe's landmark paper, "The Battered Child Syndrome."
The evening included a reception, an elegant dinner and the recognition of two child advocates: Jon Kruljac with "The Kempe Community Award" and Dr. Andrew Sirotnak with "The Kempe Professional Award." The awards established in 1985, recognized Kruljac and Sirotnak for their vision and collaborative efforts to improve the quality of life for abused and neglected kids.
Long-time community supporters Adrienne and Jack Fitzgibbons chaired the event and thanked everyone who attended and asked them to remember that the purpose of the yearly event is to make children a priority, and to help build a brighter future for those kids who are being abused and have no voice of their own.
After the live/video presentations came the main entertainment by the spectacular "The Silhouettes" a 42-member dance troupe (ages 3-to-23) that knocked the socks off of the audience - as well as the judges recently on NBC's hit Season 6 show "America's Got Talent."
The Silhouettes placed second in the competition, and they are part of Rocky Mountain School of Dance and Performing Arts in Arvada, led by Lynne Patton for the past 20 years. The dancers shake it up behind a white screen — and make silhouettes that amaze - and amaze they did! The group performed shadowed images of such patriotic symbols as the nation's Capitol, the New York City skyline, the Statue of Liberty and the Lincoln Monument. They brought tears to guests as they performed to the song "God Bless America."
Nearly 800,000 children are confirmed as having been abused or neglected in this country each year, including 11,000 in Colorado alone. Please join the effort to give them hope. The Kempe Center and Foundation provides thousands of medical consultations, psychological treatment sessions and therapy days to help children and their families. The professionals, board and volunteers at Kempe give tirelessly to make sure these children are cared for with science and compassion to make sure their innocent voices are heard.
