Man and Woman of the Year Kelly Bar-Or and Marc Paolicelli with Boy and Girl of the Year, Taylor Jones and Jack Selden
The Rocky Mountain Chapter of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) named Denver’s Marc Paolicelli and Kelly Bar-Or of Greenwood Village, as the 2012 Man & Woman of the Year during the Man & Woman of the Year Grand Finale Gala held at the Denver Marriott City Center on May 19, 2012. Ed Greene, meteorologist for CBS4 Denver, served as the evening’s emcee. Paolicelli and Bar-Or were two of 14 candidates who participated in the annual fundraising campaign, which raised more than $282,000 for blood cancer research and patient support services - a record amount raised in this campaign for the chapter.
As the individual man and woman who collected the most funds during the 10-week campaign, Paolicelli raised nearly $52,000 and Bar-Or was just shy of raising $57,000.
Paolicelli is a blood cancer survivor and is a member of LLS Rocky Mountain Chapter’s board of trustees. Bar-Or ran in honor of her mother who was diagnosed with leukemia two years ago.
"Blood cancers are the number three cancer killer in North America and the money raised during this campaign goes to fulfilling the LLS mission to find a cure. Currently, LLS has committed $260 million to funding research projects throughout the world – a commitment that will be funded one dollar a time," said Rebecca Russell, executive director for the Rocky Mountain Chapter of LLS. "We are extremely grateful to Marc and Kelly and our other Man & Woman of the Year candidates for their dedication and hard work in helping us raise funds for a cure so we can make these diseases a thing of the past."
The other candidates included Denver residents Kelli Douglas Hernandez, Jonathan Keiler and Linda Roberts Zinn; Tammy Adducci of Englewood; Highlands Ranch residents Adam Smith, Jeff Wasden and Heather Blake; Dr. Michael Plotnick of Johnstown; Evergreen’s Trish Dunbar; Larkspur’s Amanda Adamson; Edna Chang-Grant of Littleton; and 15-year-old Cassandra Perkins of Parker. All 14 candidates were inspired by the Boy & Girl of the Year, seven-year-olds Jack Selden of Louisville and Taylor Jones of Colorado Springs, who are both blood cancer survivors. Paolicelli and Bar-Or will go on to compete for the national title of Man & Woman of the Year for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.
Funds raised through the campaign are invested by LLS in leading-edge research that investigates the causes of blood cancers and seeks better therapies. The funds are also used to provide patients, their families and friends with blood cancer information and services to help them cope throughout their journey.
