Nearly 1,000 people mingled at the Denver Zoo on Friday at the annual ZooBQ, benefitting Lutheran Family Services Rocky Mountains.

LFS helps support and assist families and vulnerable children through a variety of adoption, foster care and other services, and the event at the zoo serves as a major fundraiser.

Families enjoyed a barbeque dinner surrounded by face painters, musician Stephan Hume, magician Dennis Michael and Courtney Graham, Mrs. Colorado 2012. They also got to check out the zoo exhibits, including the recently opened Toyota Elephant Passage.

"This really helps us to build more awareness in the community about LFS and who we are," said Danette Goldhammer, manager of special events and community relations. "It just really gives us an opportunity to thank our donors. We also have our foster program and and adoptive program here too and the people that we help serve. It's just a way to thank our community."

LFS, founded in 1948, responds to critical needs of about 30,000 people each year in the Rocky Mountain region, including a recently-opened office in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

The organization supports programs for adoption, pregnancy counseling, foster care, disaster response, refugee and asylee services, immigration legal services, older adult and caretaker services and prevention services.
