Dani’s Foundation held another fantastic event this year – the first annual Rocky Mountain Hold ‘Em to Help ‘Em Challenge went off without a hitch on Tuesday, September 11th, 2012 at the historic National Western Complex.  All proceeds benefit Dani’s Foundation and its mission to find a cure for pediatric cancer and pediatric sarcoma specifically.

Newmont Mining Corporation generously sponsored the event to benefit Dani’s Foundation and its efforts toward funding pediatric sarcoma research. Between the expected 400 guests and generosity from sponsors, Dani’s Foundation raised over $200,000 for its pediatric sarcoma research program.

Dani’s Foundation is especially important to everyone at Newmont Mining Corporation. “We have a close and personal connection to pediatric sarcoma cancer at Newmont. We have an employee whose son was wrecked with this disease and has really come back strongly,” said Richard O’Brien, CEO of Newmont Mining Corporation. O’Brien was referring to Jason Lansdown. Jason’s father Guy is a Vice President a Newmont and he and his wife Nicola were the impetus behind the planning of the Rocky Mountain Hold ‘Em event for Dani’s Foundation.

O’Brien went on to say, “As part of our effort on social responsibility around the world, oftentimes it's Newmont’s place as a leader in the industry to really take opportunities to give back to the community and to inspire and give opportunities for our employees to give back.” This year’s Hold ‘Em to Help ‘Em Challenge offered that very opportunity.

Woody Roseland – a 5-time cancer survivor made light of his painful experiences in the hospital dealing with pediatric sarcoma during his part of the program. He has lost friends to the disease and has even lost his leg to amputation. Somehow he has not lost his spirit.  Less than a month ago, Woody was found to have relapsed for the 6th time. Doctors found three malignant tumors in his left lung. His strength and mission to support Dani’s Foundation, pediatric cancer patients, and their families is truly an inspiration. For more information, check out his website at www.woodyroseland.com.

Entertaining the crowd was Lannie Garrett of the Patsy DeCline Show who lit up the stage with her sparkling energy. For more information: www.lannie.com.

Guests also enjoyed playing Texas Hold ‘Em, Roulette, Craps and more from Casino Rentals USA. An old Western photo booth was on site from Castle Rock Photo Booth, and saloon-style bars and savory carving stations by Continental "Divine" Catering made the event feel like a classy rodeo. Martha Simmons, Executive Director of Dani’s Foundation, played a huge part in constructing much the rustic décor for the event’s decoration. Country fashion was encouraged and guests were transformed into cowboys, cowgirls, sheriffs, and hooligans.

And, as shout out to the Gold Industry and Mining sponsors – the event organizers brought in the Denver Nuggets Cheerleaders for some “golden” photo opportunities.

Dani’s Foundation was created to honor the memory of Daniele “Dani” Stell, the daughter of Michele Ashby, Founder and President of Dani’s Foundation.  Dani was 18 when she was diagnosed with advanced Ewing’s Sarcoma, a form of pediatric sarcoma and was 19 when she lost her fight with the disease 13 years ago.

Special thanks to additional Hold ‘Em to Help ‘Em Challenge sponsors including: Agnico Eagle Mines LTD, BMO Capital Markets, Barrick Gold Corporation, RBC Capital Markets, Franco Nevada, New Gold, Inc., Royal Gold Inc., Auramet Trading, Bank of American Merrill Lynch, the Colorado Mining Association, the Electrum Group of Companies, MiNE LLC, and the Denver Gold Group. In kind sponsors for the event included Colorado Native beer, Fineline Graphics, and The Shoppe who provided the sweet treats.  Forte Advertising provided graphic flair for the event and assisted in coordinating many of the aspects of the Rocky Mountain Hold ‘Em event for Dani’s Foundation.
