These Feets were Made for Walking, Jumping, Dancing
Downtown Denver was beautiful Saturday night. The Blue Bear could be seen greeting guests for the 9th Annual celebration for Operation Walk Denver's Gala, The 2012 Walk of Dreams at the Hyatt Convention Center Hotel. It was fitting that the exquisite Hyatt lobby expressed what they were celebrating: healthy feet. As one passed through the lobby they came face to face with sculptor Bill Starke’s life-size bronze, rock climbers hoisting themselves up the 20-30 ft. lobby wall.
Operation Walk Denver was organized by local doctors who had dreams for restoring the joy of walking to men and women afflicted with debilitating arthritis and joint pain throughout the world. Twice a year, OWD sends a team of more than 60 dedicated medical volunteers to developing countries to provide free treatment for over 100 people per year. Indeed, many lives have been touched during the group’s travels to Panama, Guatemala and the Dominican Republic. Many of these individuals could barely walk, let alone run, jump, climb mountains or dance. Thanks to Operation Walk, their dreams came true.
Operation Walk doctors have one goal in mind. They hope their travels result in educating in-country orthopedic surgeons, physical therapists and healthcare professionals in the most advanced treatments and surgical procedures so they too can restore the joy of walking to their patients.
As the sun set, guests enjoyed a beautiful Colorado evening afterglow, and, the guests kept arriving and mingling amidst the brightly decorated silent auction items of gift baskets, sports equipment, jewelry, vacation getaway trips and hand-tooled leather bags. Most of the guests made it their mission to secure their bids at the auction tables before heading into grand ballroom for the evening’s program.
Top live auction items included a Bronco trip with related Bronco items donated by John Elway and Dr. Derrick & Meredith Johnson. Every one wanted The 5-day cycling tour in Tuscany, also the VIP night with the Colorado Avalanche, the nothing-leaves Las Vegas trip, a 3-bedroom villa at Waikoloa Beach Resort and the best, a trip to Panama with Operation Walk.
Executive Director Dr. Douglas Dennis said his greatest wish for the evening was that all guests leave with a better understanding of how this mission impacts a country, a community, a family and an individual.
