Once upon a time in a mile-high kingdom not so far away, philanthropic and fun-loving folk planned a grand and entertaining fundraiser to benefit National Jewish Health. On Saturday, March 9, the day began with a snowstorm of royal proportions, but in true Camelot fashion the weather abated just in time for the highly anticipated Beaux Arts “Grand Court Ball.” Lords and ladies in festive and regal dress were treated to a glittering setting for a sumptuous supper, whimsical entertainment and functional fundraising, with delightful desserts served before the clock struck midnight.
Who doesn’t love an event where tiaras are recommended attire? Denver’s iconic fundraiser royale brought out guests’ inner king and queen, garnering $2 million in generous donations to complement the event’s marvelous enticements. This year’s royal-focused theme was inspired by Queen Elizabeth’s Diamond Jubilee, as well as a nod to James Bond’s 50th anniversary.
At a bountiful reception, the Hyatt Regency at Colorado Convention Center provided a spectrum of passed and displayed hors d’oeuvres, and the sit-down dinner in the Centennial Ballroom featured a splendid menu of culinary creations. Fanciful entertainers delighted the crowd, and guests had a chance to hit the dance floor to show off their own moves throughout the dinner hour and after the program. Spotted in the ballroom crowd were Denver Mayor Michael Hancock, U.S. Rep. Mike Coffman and U.S. Rep. Ed Perlmutter. Board chair Rich Schierburg began the program with brief remarks, and National Jewish Health President and CEO Dr. Michael Salem served as after-dinner emcee, speaking about the success of National Jewish Health. Cathy and Peter Dea and Joyce Zeff were honored onstage as this year’s grand marshals, with Evelyn and Seymour Holtzman graciously standing in for Grand Marshals Kristen and Marc Holtzman, who were out of the country.
The live auction included packages befitting any royal: a vineyard stay in New Zealand’s Queenstown, a mountain retreat complete with a James Bond getaway car, and a Scottsdale weekend featuring Colorado Rockies baseball, golf and even crown jewels in the form of a Hyde Park Jewelers gift certificate. Direct donations were accepted for this year’s Fund-A-Need, The Cancer Center at National Jewish Health, integrating multispecialty clinical care, leading-edge research and the most advanced diagnostic imaging available anywhere. Guests were treated to a decadent dessert-and-coffee bar at evening’s end.
