“The point is not what we expect from life, but rather what life expects from us.” ― Viktor E. Frankl
Denver Jewish Day School teaches children to cherish the above concept. Denver JDS and other Jewish Day schools teach the value of community and that value stems from participation and relationship with the community. Denver Jewish Day School offers a unique integration of high-quality college preparatory and Jewish education in an individualized, supportive environment.
The school's very inception was a celebration of communities as Theodor Herzl Day School, a community Jewish day school established in 1975, and the Rocky Mountain Hebrew Academy, a co-ed Jewish high school established in 1979, combined to form what would be later named Denver Jewish Day School.
Board Chair Lisa Reckler Cohn added another hat to her collection of responsibilities when she assumed the roll of mistress of ceremonies at the event on Thursday the 14th. With grace and humor, she kept the event rolling. The Ha Motzi (blessing over the meal) was said by the children of the honorees and led by Rabbi Ben Greenberg of BMH-BJ Synagogue. The blessing was followed by the Denver JDS Glee Club singing the Star Spangled Banner, and the Hatikvah accompanied by Rufina Feld, music director. The invocation was led by Rabbi Bruce Dollin, Hebrew Educational Alliance.
Two wonderful videos were shown that portrayed life at Denver JDS starring mostly students. Lisa was joined on stage for the awards portion of the evening by Head of School Avi Halzel, who added more about the many activities at the school. This year's awards recipients were Amy Toltz-Miller with the Star of David Award in recognition of outstanding community service. The Neshamah Yeteirah Award (translates into an additional soul and is achieved by Judaic observance for oneself and making Jewish education possible for others) was earned by Marla & David Brown and Lisa & Jonathan Perlmutter for “their commitment to Judaism on behalf of all our children.”
Each year an alumni is asked to be the keynote speaker and this year Alyssa Wasko, 2007 graduate, rose to the podium and shared her experience at Denver JDS saying “Denver JDS gave me all of the tools I need to succeed. Not only was the value of creativity and art instilled in me, but also the warmth and love that comes with the life long friends that I created during my time at the school." Allyssa is the founder and creative director of donni charm, an international fashion company featuring scarves adorned with unique charms.
The inspiration for doni charm came from Alyssa’s father, Donny Wasko. After her father was killed in an accident, Alyssa began making the scarves for her friends as a way to occupy her time and cope with her loss. As interest and demand grew she could no longer hand cut all the scarves and began to manufacture. Today donni charm has expanded to over 1,000 retail locations worldwide. Alyssa is one beautiful example of how the spirit of creativity and support have created hundreds of young leaders at Denver JDS.
