The Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Denver has a long tradition of building character and supporting outstanding achievement.  Once again, exceptional youths were given the organization’s highest honor as “Youths of the Year” at the BGCMD Annual Gala. The overall winner was Moises Banuelos, a member of the William E. Cope Boys & Girls Club. At only 16 years old, Banuelos has already experienced much hardship during his childhood, including being the target of schoolyard cruelty. In response, Banuelos decided to create positive change by working with the Teen Outreach Program and implementing an anti-bullying campaign. Often in the crosshairs because of his intelligence, he could have gone down a completely different road but for the support of the Boys & Girls Clubs. Now, Banuelos has a 4.5 G.P.A., is a member of the National Honor Society and serves as a Student Council Treasurer. He hopes to attend Denver University and one day fulfill his dream of becoming an FBI Agent.  He attributes the Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Denver with helping to nurture his aptitude and transform him into a powerful youth leader.

Over 800 people attended this year’s event. Elected officials, including Gov. John Hickenlooper and Colorado State Treasurer Walker Stapleton, were in attendance, as well as Broncos Football Club President Joe Ellis and many other notable Denver philanthropists.

Something to look forward to is the completion of a new club location at the Nancy P. Anschutz Center at 3333 Holly Street.  The Jack A. Vickers Boys and Girls Club, as it will be named, is scheduled to open in the fall of 2013. This will offer even more children access to the many great services provided by the Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Denver. The clubs mean the world to the youth that use them. In their own words, one child said what they like most about the club is “having that family feeling and having such great staff members that are role models.”  Another said, “I learned to be a good sport, show teamwork, gain more self-confidence, have resiliency throughout life, always be optimistic and give 110% no matter what it is you’re doing.”

Joe Ellis spoke fondly of the Denver Broncos Boys & Girls Club in Montbello.  “This club is truly a staple of the neighborhood. Not just for cookouts and holidays, but to ensure the best future for the kids in the community.” Ellis was passionate about giving back to the organization to “not only make our city better, but to make it stronger.”

Through the remarkable efforts of the sponsors, such as presenting sponsors DaVita and Kent Thiry & Denise O’Leary, as well as the Libby Anschutz Brown Foundation, Suncor Energy, Berenbaum Weinshienk PC, Century Link and more, along with the many donors and community supporters, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Denver was able to raise over $500,000 to keep the clubs vibrant, maintain their outstanding programming and to help kids flourish in becoming successful individuals and leaders.
