The Western Fantasy gala, the granddaddy of Denver fund-raisers, brings in $1 million for Volunteers of America each year.
It has also sparked a romance or two.
"The 1994 Western Fantasy gala was one of our first dates," 2002 event co-chair Sherri Huseby told the 2002 gala committee members at a kickoff party May 21 at the Blue Sky Grille in the Pepsi Center. Her date that night back in 1994, Michael Huseby, wore a tuxedo jacket over his Levi's and boots, "and needless to say, he swept me off my feet. A year later, we got married in Telluride in our cowboy boots, and we've been to every Western Fantasy gala since."
The Husebys are chairing the event this year. "We're honored that you're here," Michael Huseby, CFO of AT&T Broadband, told the volunteers as they enjoyed a well-received buffet of chili and shrimp prepared by the Blue Sky. "It's a privilege to be a part of the premiere event in Denver, and certainly the most fun one."
The gala will be Saturday, Oct. 26, in the National Western Event Center. In the past, several big names in country music have performed, including Brooks & Dunn, Alabama and Kenny Rogers. This year's headliner is still under wraps.
Corporate tables run $5,000 to $50,000. Janet Elway, Debi Medved, Ed and Lisa McCaffrey, Annabel Bowlen, and Amy Sporer are among the many high-profile committee chairs.
