Josef Korbel, a man with values and vision, knew the importance of international relations. His leadership in world affairs and his 27 years at the University of Denver touched the lives of many people. An active teaching and writing schedule, which included mentoring such students as his daughter, Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, and National Security Advisory Condoleezza Rice, marked Dr. Korbel’s tenure at DU. Friday night, guests gathered for the 2003 Korbel Dinner, which was held at the Marriott City Center. This dinner, held in his name, benefits the Graduate School of International Studies’ Center for Teaching International Relations and the Korbel Scholarship Fund. GSIS prepares men and women to play leading roles on the world stage- whether in the public, private or the non-profit sector. GSIS not only educates future leaders, it also serves as the principle venue in the region for public discussion of matters of international importance. Friday night’s dinner honored three distinguished Americans. The University of Denver Peace and Justice Award was presented to former Secretary of State Madeleine Korbel Albright, daughter of Josef Korbel. The University of Denver International Bridge Builders Award was presented to the Honorable Hank Brown, whose career accomplishments include United States Senator, President of the University of Northern Colorado and President of the Daniels Fund. The recipient of the The Josef Korbel Humanitarian Award, which recognizes individuals who, through humanitarian and philanthropic efforts, are dedicated to preserving the principles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, was Peter Kudla, CEO of Metropolitan Homes. Welcoming the guests was KCNC News4’s, Ed Greene. John Sie, founder, Chairman and CEO of Starz Encore, and honorary chair for the evening, congratulated the award recipients and spoke about the role of GSIS in today’s world. After dinner, Tom Farer, Dean, Graduate School of International Studies, Robert Loup, Korbel Dinner Executive Chair and Daniel Ritchie, Chancellor, University of Denver, presented the awards. Keynote speaker for the evening was Secretary of State, Madeleine Korbel Albright. The University of Denver’s GSIS is one of the elite professional schools of international studies. GSIS prepares men and women to assume positions of leadership in transnational society and helps to accelerate the careers of those already on the threshold of distinction.
