The Inverness Golf & Conference Center hosted the 2013 Cindy Acree Awards. The Colorado Neurological Institute, or CNI, is the largest and most comprehensive neuroscience center in the Rocky Mountain region. The Columbine Room at the Inverness Golf & Conference Center was softly lit with candles on each table, and a gorgeous view of the sunset over the golf course. Guests mingled during the reception hour, enjoying snacks and beverages and catching up with one another.

Changing the Future' was brought to life with the stories of courage and survival celebrated in the 2013 Hope Awards.
The four awardees received an engraved award to memorialize the evening. CNI Board President Ron Kubit welcomed guests, and introduced Cindy Acree, the emcee for the evening. The Hope Awards are given to CNI patients who have demonstrated great courage in the face of a neurological condition. The awards are named after Cindy Acree's daughter, Hope. Volunteer Linda Biery was recognized by Ron Kubit for her outstanding service.
Cindy Acree addressed guests with her own story of courage in the face of epilepsy and a stroke, and talked of resilience and persistance overcoming great odds. Dr. Rajeev Kumar told the story of Donna Miller's courageous battle with Parkinson's Disease, and the difference that she is now making in the lives of others suffering from PD. Donna Miller told of how she decided that she would undergo deep brain stimulation surgery in order to control her Parkinson's Disease symptoms, and how much this experience has changed her life. Dr. Alex West tells the extraordinary story of Jack Sommars' survival of a serious brain bleed. Dr. David Loy described his experiences caring for Jack Sommars, and the courage that his wife, Talia Hoffman, demonstrated in deciding to move forward with a risky but ultimately successful course of treatment. While Jack Sommars doesn't remember his hospitalization, he is deeply grateful to his physicians and his wife for their care that pulled him through, and he plans to write a book about his miraculous recovery. Jack Sommars embraces Dr. Alex West, one of several people who were instrumental in saving Jack's life.
Cindy Acree presents Jack Sommars with the 2013 Hope Award Cindy Acree presents Caitlyn Deichsel with the 2013 Hope Award for her courage in the face of multiple cochlear implant surgeries. Dr. David Kelsall, Caitlyn's physician, tells of her incredible resilience and courage. Caitlyn enjoyed attending camp for kids with cochlear implants, and raised money with a lemonade stand to ensure that camps will be available this summer for children like her to enjoy themselves and make friends in a comfortable environment.
Dr. Daniel Huddle tells of his patient, Henrik Frei, a young man who suffered a stroke this past year, and who has fought bravely and worked hard to rehabilitate. Cindy Acree and Dr. Daniel Hubble present Henrik Frei with the 2013 Hope Award Henrik Frei tells of his hopes for the future, which include returning to all his former activities and being a father to his three young children. Tami Lack, Executive Director of CNI, thanked guests for attending.
Tami Lack and Cindy Acree made an appeal to all of those present to donate to CNI to keep programs available to children and adults with neurological disorders. Lorre Gibson, a CNI staff member who has been with CNI since the beginning 25 years ago, was honored for her years of service.
